from Community Spotlight magazine: Wickersley Chase Update

The KMR Series of twelve races is a local co-operative venture between Kimberworth, Maltby and Rotherham running clubs. Each club now provides four events, and they vary quite widely. What is common to each event however, is a very friendly atmosphere, low prices, plenty of awards and a good social as part of each with refreshment of some sort thrown in. And pretty keen competition.

They have fast runners at the front and slow or developing runners lower down, so you will find you fit in whatever your speed. Eminently suitable for new or developing runners. Though each race has it's own format and rewards, there are series awards also in all the junior, senior and veteran categories- usually awarded at the last race (Braithwell Boxing Day). Watch out at races or in the local press if you are interested in the 2017 series when that time comes around.

At Rotherham HAC we have for some time had the Bassingthorpe (Wingfield) trail race, Ulley Res (Whiston) trail race and Milton 5k road race (Greasbrough). For our fourth we are very keen to offer racing in S66 which is clearly a vibrant area in many ways- not least in the number of runners to be seen on the streets.

Traffic however is very, very difficult, and though we have very agreeable rural amenities close by, it's not so easy to use them for our purpose. There is great potential in the Whiston direction for trail, and some potential in the Bramley direction for road (at least, in part) so it came down to making a choice. The initial try is a trail race; it is more than likely that we will try a (mainly) road race later and see what the local interest is.

The inaugural Wickersley Chase is on Saturday October 1st with an 11am start. The venue for organisation etc is Wickersley Working Men's Social Club on Morthern Road (S66 1EN) which will be open for the purpose at 9.30am with entries from 10am. 5 for members of UKA affiliated clubs, 7 if unattached. We have placed a minimum age of 15 on the day for entries.

There is good parking at the WMC, failing which use suitable local roads. No parking on Gillott Lane please.

The start and finish will be on Gillott Lane (next to the Institute and Bowling Green) either close to or on the recreation ground (depending on other use) part-way down. The race route is approximately 4.4 miles by GPS taking in part of Wickersely Gorse and field towards Sitwell Golf Club. Over by around 12 noon, there will be free refreshements in the WMC with bar available.

During the social time, awards (wine or chocolates) will be made to first, second and third in race, under-20 and under-17 (for both male and female) and five-year span age groups for veteran runners (male 40-44 up to 65-59 and 70-plus, female 35-39 up to 6-64 and 65-plus). And further awards for S66 runners.

Entries may be made on the day (no surcharge) but those wishing to pre-enter can do so online or download an entry form to post at www.rotherhamharriers.org/wickersley, which will also have course information later in September.
