Yorkshire Cross Country Championships, Sat 5th January, Lightwater Valley.
Rotherham harriers started their 2019 championship season with some excellent individual and team performances at the Yorkshire Championships.
With good dry underfoot conditions resulting in fast times and races across all the age groups, the Harriers got off to an excellent start in the first race for U13 girls, with a team win for the A team. Again the clubs proven strength in this age group showed with 1st B (5th place) and 1st C team (12th place). Marci Walsh in 4th and Amelia Topliss in 7th were both selected for the Yorkshire team for the Inter Counties championships in March, and Evie Thomson in 18th secured the gold team medal - the first time for over 12 years.
In the U13 boys race Luke Parker, in an excellent 7th place, led the A team home to 5th in the team placings. Luke secured his first County selection with this performance.
Hayley Butcher ran a phenomenal race to secure a Silver medal in the U15 girl's race, and gain selection for the County team. Josh Gilbert had a much improved run in the U15 boys race finishing 26th.
The U17 women's team won silver team medals, just 3 points behind local rivals Hallamshire.
Elliott Morton was our only runner in the U17 men's race, finishing a creditable 10th, in his first year in this age group.
Cyane Robinson was our only athlete in the Junior women's race, which is run in conjunction with t6he senior womens race - with the juniors running one lap less. Cyane dominated the junior race, finishing 40 seconds ahead of York's Georgia Rothwell in second place. Cyane has been selected to represent the North of England at Stirling this coming weekend, and the county result shows that she is in top form currently.
In the senior women's race, the Harriers team have an impressive recent record winning team medals in each of the last 6 years, and it was again a battle with rival's Leeds City for the team win. Leeds, led home by International Claire Duck, won the title with 26 points to the harriers total of 42. Hallamshire harriers were 3rd with 71 points. Nicola Devine had a great run to finish 2nd, with Natasha Hatswell in 5th also securing selection to the county team.
In the final race of the day, the team honours were again likely to be between Leeds City and Rotherham, and whilst European top 10 Emile Cairess ran away from a high class field to get the individual win for Leeds the Harriers A team - with their 6 scorers inside the first 22 finishers - were deserving winners. This is the first time for many years that the men have won team gold - they were second last year.
ex Rotherham harrier Jonathan Thewlis was second, just 8 seconds ahead of International triathlete Jonny Brownlee.
Luke Cotter ran impressively, to lead the men's team home, in 5th place with Elliot Smales in 6th place. The club strengh in depth again showed with the 6 members of the B team placing 4th team and first B team.
With the individual and team medals won & a total of nine club athletes securing selection for the county teams, this was one of the most successful county performances of recent years.
